It's possible that Charlie is being driven across country by a serial killer. The stranger, Jordan Baxter, met her at the college ride share board, both with reasons to leave in the middle of the semester. Carefully navigating the elephant in the room, the Campus Killer. Dominating the news, the serial killer had killed their fourth student victim in a year span. On their journey, Charlie starts noticing discrepancies in Jordan's story. Certain he is the killer, Charlie starts plotting her escape until she suspects him of catching onto her plans. Being set in 1990, Sager had the advantage of no cell phones, but the plot has a small 'cliche horror movie' feel. Sager added a few extra twists to create a riveting story.
